JPG to PNG conversion guide
Converting a JPEG to PNG rewrites the photo in a lossless format. The picture will not lose any further quality when it is edited or saved again, and it can hold transparency from that point on. The trade-off is a noticeably larger file, because PNG stores every pixel exactly.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
- Prevents the extra quality loss that happens every time a JPEG is re-saved.
- Gives you a file you can edit, layer and mask without compression artefacts building up.
- Produces a bigger file, and cannot recover detail already removed by the original JPEG compression.
JPEG vs PNG
JPEG — JPEG is a lossy photo format. It compresses continuous-tone images into small files, but it cannot store transparency and loses a little detail every time it is re-saved.
PNG — PNG is a lossless format made for sharp graphics and screenshots. It keeps exact pixel values and full alpha transparency, which usually makes files larger than JPEG or WEBP.
When to convert JPG to PNG
- You plan to edit the image more than once and want to stop artefacts from accumulating.
- You need a format that can hold transparency later: JPG does not support transparency, and converting to PNG does not remove a background by itself — it only lets you add alpha after you have removed the background.
- The image contains text, line art or flat colour that JPEG has softened.
What to watch out for
- The PNG is often two to three times larger than the original JPEG.
- Detail already discarded by JPEG compression is not recovered.

JPG to PNG frequently asked questions
- Does converting JPG to PNG improve the image quality?
- No. The detail already discarded by JPEG compression is gone forever. A PNG prevents any further loss from future edits, which is why it is the better working format.
- Why is the PNG file so much larger than the JPG?
- PNG is lossless, so it stores the full colour of every pixel instead of approximating blocks of them. On photographic content that easily doubles or triples the file size.
